Summer’s here and the outdoors beckons. Heed that call and you’ll reap physical and mental health benefits. Here are five good reasons to get outdoors:

1. Your vitamin D levels will go up

Vitamin D – good for you!

Sunlight hitting the skin begins a process that leads to the creation and activation of vitamin D. Many of us are not getting enough vitamin D – probably because we’re spending so much time indoors. It’s become so concerning that in 2008, researchers reported that vitamin D deficiency “is now recognised as a pandemic.” Studies suggest that this vitamin helps fight certain conditions, from osteoporosis and cancer, to depression and heart attacks. Limited sun exposure (don’t overdo it), supplemented with vitamin D pills if necessary, is a good regimen.

2. You’ll get more exercise

There’s no question that indoor living is associated with being sedentary, particularly for children, while being outdoors is associated with activity. If you make getting outside a goal, that should mean less time in front of the TV and computer, and more time doing other things that put the body in motion.

3. You’ll be happier

Light tends to elevate people’s mood, and there’s usually more light available outside than in. Physical activity has been shown to help people relax and cheer up, so if being outside replaces inactive pursuits with active ones, it might also mean more smiles! 🙂

4. You’ll boost your immune system

Researchers have found that people walking among the garden boosted their immune systems. More specifically, after the participants inhaled the natural “phytoncides” in the air, their blood tests showed increased activity of natural killer cells.

5. You may heal faster

De-stress with nature

Think of nature as the counterbalance to the scatteredness of your attention when you’re swiping and clicking through different work, entertainment and social sites. These “media-multitasking” behaviours have been linked to higher rates of anxiety and depression – both of which, time spent outdoors seems to combat.

It’s clear that nature is in our blood, so do yourself a favour this week and get outdoors for better health!
