'Love Your Garden' with Alan Titchmarsh is a popular garden makeover programme on ITV.
Each week, the team of garden experts transform barren plots and small neglected grounds into stunning gardens, while showing viewers how to recreate the look in their own gardens with minimum fuss.
It happens to be one of our favourite TV programmes too, and we were delighted when they asked us to lend a hand to make over a garden for a very deserving staffer at Blackpool Zoo.
In Episode 8, Alan and his crack team headed to Blackpool to design a garden for inspirational zookeeper and wildlife fundraiser, John Paul (JP) Houston. Such is the dedication of the 28-year-old, JP not only works, but also lives full time at Blackpool Zoo.
Alan meets JP near the penguin enclosure and takes on the challenge of transforming an uninspiring scruffy piece of lawn next to, and overlooking the public carpark. With a clever design, he turns it into a private retreat for JP to share with all the other dedicated keepers at the zoo.
The garden was split into zones – daytime eating, covered bar, evening firepit, quiet retreat for contemplation and escape, and fun and games – each reflecting continents around the world.
The La Hacienda Africa Fire Globe was chosen to be the focal point for the Africa area, and played an integral part in the renovated garden…
“We wanted the amazing team of keepers from Blackpool Zoo to have a fantastic area to sit, chat and keep warm at the same time. The Africa Fire Globe from La Hacienda is no ordinary outdoor fire, it’s a stunning globe which not only provides a focal point, but has incredible cut out silhouettes, bringing the heart of the African continent into the garden.”
Made from 6mm heavy gauge steel, and with a cast iron stand, it is extremely robust and can be used to heat your outdoor space for many years to come. With its natural oxidised finish and stunning African design, this Fire Globe allows you to create your very own African sunset.
To complement the wildlife theme, our metal heron, peacock and lizard animals were hand-picked to complete the look. The La Hacienda range was chosen because of its quality and attention to detail which presents a very natural and realistic look.
The presenters shared clever ways on creating privacy without the need for building walls or fences.
Like JP – and the more than 4 million viewers who tuned in, we were really excited to see the final garden makeover when it was unveiled…
“It was the talk of the zoo as everyone wondered what the team were going to do with the area of grassland that had a few old picnic benches on it for us keepers to eat lunch at… but in my wildest dreams I wouldn’t have imagined how amazing it actually is!
“There is a beautiful firepit and a relaxing water feature as well as outdoor and undercover eating areas. I really can’t thank Alan and the team enough, we have already made some great memories in the garden and there will be plenty more in the years to come!”
It was a real pleasure to be involved and I’m sure you’ll agree – the end result was impressive!
